Understanding the Fencing Kit: The Fencing Plastron

When gearing up for fencing, understanding your equipment and safety risk awareness is crucial. Every piece of the fencing kit serves a specific protective purpose to keep fencers safe during a bout. In this episode, we focus on the plastron and why it’s so vital.

What is the Plastron?

The plastron (or under-plastron) is a fundamental safety layer in a fencer’s kit. Worn on the upper body, its primary function is to protect the fencer's dominant arm and side during action.

How to Wear the Plastron

Proper layering is key to ensuring maximum protection:

Layering: The plastron is worn over the chest protector/plate and underneath the main fencing jacket, which serves as the final outer layer of clothing.

How to Secure the Plastron

To make sure the plastron stays securely intact and properly fitted throughout the entire duration of a bout, it features two main fastings:

Neck Strap: A flexible rubber strap that loops comfortably around the fencer's neck.

Side Fastener: A plastic buckle system designed to adjust and hold the garment firmly in place.
