Introducing the Fencing Kit

Welcome to our fencing channel! I’m Zuri, and joined by my fellow épée fencer Hannah, we are covering everything you need to know about standard fencing kit essentials and risk awareness.

Whether you are just getting started or refreshing your gear safety, here is a quick guide to the primary pieces of protective equipment every fencer needs:

  • Fencing Shoes: Specially designed footwear to handle the footwork, lunges, and lateral movement required on the piste.

  • Fencing Socks: Long socks that pull up to cover the lower leg, bridging the gap between your shoes and knickers.

  • Breeches (Knickers): Protective trousers that cover your legs and overlap with your upper-body gear.

  • Chest Plate: A rigid plastic chest protector worn under the underarm protector to shield against impacts.

  • Glove: Protects your sword hand and provides a secure grip on your weapon.

  • Plastron: An underarm protector worn beneath your main jacket to provide an extra layer of puncture resistance over your vital organs.

  • Jacket: The main protective top gear that covers the torso and arms.

Proper gear is your first line of defense in staying safe while fencing. Stay tuned for our next update where we dive deeper into proper fit and safety maintenance!
